Taking in some culture

After class, during the weekend or for a relaxing break, there’s nothing like immersing yourself in some culture! The Troyes urban area has a variety of cultural venues offering a wide range of things to discover and a great number of activities.

Greater Troyes Media Library

Both a living space for all inhabitants of the Troyes urban area and a university library, Greater Troyes Media Library is a facility that’s strongly rooted in its area. The central media library, with its two annexes, is at the centre of a public reading network connecting municipal libraries and association libraries, through management of a shared catalogue, a single reader’s card and joint cultural actions. No fewer than 620,000 documents are therefore accessible throughout the urban area.

In 2009, the media libraries lowered their rates, expanded their document collection and extended their opening times, to better meet the needs of students in particular.

The central media library is located in Troyes, in the city centre, next to the Espace Argence, in a recent building that received the Equerre d’Argent award for its architecture. It is open to the public around fifty hours a week and is aimed at a wide range of audiences, offering free access to important collections in an agreeable setting.
It also carries out an active cultural action policy: conferences, meetings and exhibitions, aimed at young people and adults in the interest of promoting the area’s heritage. These events rely on constant work in the districts of Les Marots, Les Chartreux and Le Point du Jour, as well as on partner institutions and associations in development.

The Troyes urban area media library retains prestigious, ancient collections, mainly in the library of the former Clairvaux Abbey, with 1750 manuscripts from the 6th to the 15th century, a large popular literature collection, and a fine collection of early printed books.

The Maison du Patrimoine (Heritage Centre)

Inaugurated in 2004, the Maison du Patrimoine de l'Agglomération Troyenne (Heritage House of the Troyes urban area) is an establishment for the promotion of university research, mainly based on knowledge of regional and national heritage.

Its aim is to complement and support higher education provision in the Troyes urban area by hosting and/or holding:
- course cycles: the Louvre School and the Chaillot School (unique in Champagne-Ardenne),
- conferences, symposiums and workshops,
- exhibitions put together on site or planned by other cultural service providers.
It also serves as a tool for associations working to promote the area’s cultural heritage. Depending on the project, the Maison du Patrimoine can make its premises available to associations.

To host the events on its programme, The Maison du Patrimoine has a variety of facilities:

  • Exhibition rooms (from 60 to 210 m²)

  • 2 classrooms (10 to 18 seats)

  • 1 auditorium of 275 seats (8 seats accessible to people with reduced mobility)

  • 1 heritage documentation centre (350 works that can be consulted on site, by appointment)

The Maison du Patrimoine welcomes around 5 000 people throughout the year and arranges its activity around three highlights: classes by the Louvre School and the City of Architecture and Heritage, exhibitions and conferences.
