The University Institute of Heritage Trades

The Technological Innovation Cluster for Built Heritage Restoration

Founded in 1989, the University Institute of Heritage Trades (IUMP) is a vocational training centre and think tank specialising in built heritage which goes beyond the Troyes urban area to acquire expertise on a national level.

Having received the Pôle d’Innovation Technologique National en Restauration du Patrimoine Bâti (National Technological Innovation Cluster for Built Heritage Restoration) label in May 2007, today the IUMP sets the standard in the field of built heritage restoration. It operates on a national basis, attending several trade shows as well as providing courses and information to professional organisations. It is also international, setting up partnerships and technical assistance schemes with countries like Germany, Poland, Russia, China, Morocco or Tunisia.

The institute is made up of three clusters:

  • initial training,

  • continuing training,

  • built heritage restoration research centre

An initial training period of two years combines training in a building trade (structural works, plumbing and heating or carpentry) with acquiring vocational diplomas, and university education focussing on managing and starting a business, leading to a university diploma in “Built Heritage Business Management”.

This course is unique in France and trains future artisanal business managers.

A vocational curriculum in continuing education

The aim of the IUMP’s Heritage Department is to train, inform and advise all professionals working in building heritage restoration and to raise awareness of collective heritage management among decision-makers.

The actions organised by the IUMP are aimed at practitioners, employees and craftspeople working in restoration, but also at project managers, architects and technical departments in the territorial collectivities, at a national level.

The Technological Innovation Cluster for Built Heritage Restoration

The role of the Technological Innovation Cluster for Built Heritage Restoration is to support and inform building industry professionals and built heritage restoration workers at a national level.

Upon its establishment, the Technological Innovation Cluster for Built Heritage Restoration took on the four missions recommended for Technological Innovation Clusters:

  • Liaising with external resource centres in the field of new technologies and building expertise.

  • Researching suitable solutions to meet the needs of small businesses by setting up technological, regulatory and economic monitoring.

  • Disseminating appropriate knowledge and practices through the website and the Cluster’s quarterly Letter, arranging Technical Meetings and circulating data sheets.

  • Providing direct assistance to businesses to give them access to new technologies.
